September 9th meeting: UAPD; Plotting Via Motivation

A college campus is the size of a small city, with many of the same problems, but packed into a small space. Join us in welcoming Chief Brian Seastone of the UAPD, who will tell us what it’s like to work as law enforcement in that environment, the special challenges it presents and how it differs (or doesn’t) from a city or county police force.

We’ll have a delicious lunch, and we will also be announcing the winners of the 2017 Short Story Contest!

In our afternoon session, author and teacher Laurie Schnebly will discuss “plotting via motivation.”  Any of us could write a book in which the characters set out for a three-hour tour and get shipwrecked on an uncharted desert isle. But if you nail down a character’s motivation, it doesn’t matter whether the ship capsizes or lands safely three hours later. Your characters will create a plot from WHATEVER happens, because you’ve got their motivation built in from the very beginning…and Schnebly will show you how to do it.

RSVP by 9:30 am, Wednesday, September 6th to save your place. $30 non-members includes lunch. $25 RSVP’d AMW (not Meetup) members. Pay at the door. RSVP by clicking the button on http://www.meetup.com/Arizona-Mystery-Writers-of-Tucson/ or email amwmembershipchair@gmail.com. See you there!

Note: The “Winner Dinner” to honor everyone who entered our short story contest will take place Friday, September 8 (the evening before the next meeting) at 5:30 p.m. at the Claim Jumper Restaurant, 3761 E Broadway Blvd (near El Con Mall).
